KOR(MOTIE)-USA(DoD) Autonomous Soft Robotics International Joint Research
Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) on Foundational Approaches to Embodied
Intelligence for Future Generations of Robotics.
This program is a bilateral Korea-US joint research initiative based on an agreement between the Korean Ministry of Trade,
Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the US Department of Defense (DoD). Each country will provide funding to its respective institutions for
jointly selected projects.
Applicants must comply with their national funding agency’s regulations and submit separate applications to both Korean and US agencies.

1. Program Overview
Research Topic: Development of fundamental technologies for next-generation robotics based on Embodied Intelligence (EI).
Research Goal: Realization of a new robotic design ecosystem where individual components embody intelligence and learning capabilities, can be independently trained, and are assembled into a fully functional system with emergent capabilities.
Research Areas (including but not limited to):
Mathematics: Complexity reduction, novel information processing methods
Materials/Mechanical/Electrical & Electronic Engineering: Development and operation of physical components, embedded sensors, embodied adaptation
Budget: Up to 2 billion KRW (~$1.5M USD) per project
Project Duration: October 2025 – September 2029 (48 months)

3. Eligibility
Lead Research Institution: Universities or research institutions
Collaborating Institutions: Companies, universities, research institutes, research associations, business organizations, and medical institutions as defined in the Industrial Technology Innovation Promotion Act
Applicants must form a consortium with US institutions for joint research. Proposals must be submitted to both Korean and US funding agencies to be considered. Single-country submissions will be automatically disqualified.
