Admission to the Graduate Program

Mechanical Engineering is one of the traditional engineering disciplines and is also at the forefront of modern technological innovations. Stony Brook University and SUNY Korea place a strong emphasis on graduate programs that produce individuals with competent backgrounds in the basic principles and who are prepared for research and development positions in the industry, university faculty positions, and leadership roles in government agencies.

Students can choose one of three areas of concentration : mechanical design, solid mechanics, and thermal sciences and fluid mechanics. They can then focus on an experimental, analytical, or computational aspect or a combination of these aspects.

M.S. Program in Mechanical Engineering

The M.S. program is designed to train students with a professional career in business, industry, or government. Besides the regular M.S. program, we also offer a combined five-year B.E./M.S. program.

Accelerated B.E./M.S. Degree

Undergraduate mechanical engineering majors with strong academic performance (GPA of 3.2 or above) may apply for admission to the Accelerated Bachelor of Engineering/Master of Science (B.E./M.S.) degree program in mechanical engineering at the end of their junior year. Once accepted into this program, students will be permitted to take up to 9 graduate credits in replacement of the required technical electives. These credits will be applied towards both their Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree. Note in order to count more than 6 credits (i.e., 3rd graduate course), the student must be enrolled in the graduate program. Ph.D. Program in Mechanical Engineering

The Ph.D. program is for students interested in obtaining academic or research positions in colleges and universities or in government and commercial research laboratories. The program gives students a rigorous and thorough knowledge of a broad range of theoretical and practical research subject areas and develops the ability to recognize and pursue significant research in Mechanical Engineering.

Requirements for the admission to the Graduate Program of Mechanical Engineering

• A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or a closely related field.
• A grade point average of at least B in undergraduate study and previous graduate study (if applicable).
• Completion and submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test.
• Students who indicate that their first or native language is not English are required to achieve (1) a minimum TOEFL score of 80 for M.S. admission and 90 for admission to the doctoral program (2) a minimum IELTS Score of 6.5 and to be eligible for consideration for Teaching Assistant (TA) support. All Ph.D. applicants with a TA stipend whose native language is not English must demonstrate a sufficient level of English-speaking proficiency (TOEFL Speaking score) and may be required to take ESL courses based on these measures.

Application Process

All applications for admissions must be submitted online. Please note that we only accept online applications. The application fee must be paid in order to submit your application.

Each applicant should include the following items with their online application

• A statement of purpose, describing your interests and motivation to pursue a graduate degree.
• A resume or CV, describing your work experience, course projects, and areas of expertise.
• Three recommendation letters from academia or industry. At least two (2) letters must be submitted by the recommender through the online system. A single paper letter of reference will be accepted. Paper letters must be sent in sealed envelopes with recommenders signature across the seal and include the paper recommendation form downloadable on ApplyNow. Note : Paper letters will slow down the review process of your application.

Any additional documents included in your application will be disregarded.

Official Transcript

Please arrange for two (2) official transcripts for each institution attended beyond secondary school to be mailed to the address below. Please specify if you are applying for the MS or Ph.D. Program in the address. Transcripts are required to review your application. Please submit them as early as possible. Transcripts can be mailed prior to the submittal of the ApplyNow application.
