[Student Reporter] FIT’s Curated Tee Shirt Returns to the Incheon Art Show 2024
Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Fashion Design students have once again been able to share their art at the annual Incheon Art Show this November, and this year was nothing short of impactful. This past week, the Fashion Design Department of FIT, SUNY Korea had the opportunity to create, showcase, and sell their designs at the Incheon Art Show 2024, held at Songdo Convensia Hall. This was a significant event for many students, allowing them to develop their skills for creating one-of-a-kind art that is marketed towards a large customer base. The Incheon Art Show is an exhibition consisting of famous artists from Korea and abroad, with over 6,000 works being showcased this year. As the largest art festival in Incheon, it gathers many art enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds, who are now being introduced to the talent FIT has to offer. Professor Blackman, Department Chair of Fashion Design, gave a rundown of their theme this year, explaining that “everything was AI generated to make sure that students understood the business relationship between AI and their own inspiration and intuition.” This was done artfully by having fashion design students come up with concepts that spoke to them, “and then we had to figure out how to make the concepts marketable through color choice, through composition, and sayings.” There were 47 looks to choose from, spanning from futuristic, vibey graphics, to witty, relatable quotes, reaching many different consumer markets interested in the diverse colors, styles, and symbolism of the tops designed by FIT creatives. Designs were sold on tee shirts, allowing visitors to wear the art that resonated with them (or loved ones) best, adding a personalized touch to enjoying and sharing art. Blackman shared that after the event ends, pre orders will be fulfilled, minimizing the risk of extra inventory and allowing students to see what graphics sold best, and in what colors, providing a learning opportunity to get a better grasp of the market and reflect on their predictions. The art show aligns perfectly with the global presence SUNY Korea fosters in its students, giving students experience creating and marketing their ideas in the midst of technological advances and unique cultural tastes to appeal to the wide variety of people attending the art show. Chanel Korea Hosts FIT Students at New Les Ateliers in Seoul for Exclusive Career Day
On Monday, July 23rd, 17 students from the Fashion Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) were invited to the newly opened Chanel & Moi – Les Ateliers Seoul. This location marks the fifth Chanel Les Ateliers worldwide, a significant milestone for the brand as the number “5” has significant meaning for the founder, Gabrielle Chanel, making the Seoul location particularly noteworthy. Recognizing the growing demand for high-end fashion in Korea, Chanel opened this latest atelier to connect more closely with its customers. The place not only offers a wide range of exclusive services but also provides comprehensive after-sales support for all Chanel products. One of the highlights is the opportunity for one-on-one connections with one of Chanel’s ‘Tailor Apprentice,’ a top specialist who possesses an in-depth understanding of the brand’s unique characteristics. During their visit, the FIT students participated in Chanel’s first-ever ‘Career Day’ at the new atelier. They were given a tour of the workshop and introduced to a special Chanel’s Apprentice Program. This recruitment initiative aims to educate and inspire young talent, fostering a new generation of designers who will continue the Chanel legacy. They were also given the opportunity to connect with the tailors and ask one-and-one questions about what it is like working at Chanel. The event emphasized the importance of building trust and maintaining strong relationships with loyal customers, highlighting how crucial it is to offer exceptional service. For the FIT students, this was a unique opportunity to gain insight into the inner workings of a leading fashion house and potentially secure employment to further develop their skills.

SUNY Korea Class of 2024 Commencement and FIT's AAS Exhibition
SUNY Korea held its Spring 2024 Commencement Ceremony and the AAS Exhibition for FIT’s graduating class of 2024 Fashion Design students on June 14th. Spring 2024 Commencement A total of 158 people graduated, including 81 from five departments from Stony Brook University – Computer Science, Technology & Society, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics & Statistics, and Business Management – and 77 from the Fashion Design and Fashion Business Management Departments of the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). During the commencement ceremony, Arthur H. Lee, President of SUNY Korea, sincerely congratulated the graduates. He emphasized the SUNY Korea spirit to the graduates, urging them to put into action the knowledge acquired during their university years, execute their plans, and share these efforts with those around them to contribute to making a better world. Deborah Klesenski, FIT’s Associate Vice President for Faculty and Student Academic Support Programs, gave a congratulatory speech. She praised the students for their hard work and advised the graduates to be artists who always question their own perspectives, emphasizing that what makes an individual's life special is their story. She encouraged them to never abandon three essential elements – art, passion, and friends – in order to better endure the various chapters of life. Klesenski reminded the graduates that their efforts and perseverance can lead to significant achievements in the future. Carl Lejuez, Chairman of SUNY Korea LLC, also attended the graduation ceremony. He stated, "There is no predetermined correct path in life; I hope you walk a journey that is meaningful to you." He expressed gratitude for the students' dedication, which has enabled SUNY Korea to become a more advanced educational institution. AAS Exhibition The AAS Exhibition, organized by the graduates of FIT's Fashion Design Department, featured the theme of "Thierry Mugler." All garments on display were designed and produced by the graduating class of 2024 in remembrance of Thierry Mugler's design legacy. Mark-Evan Blackman, Fashion Design Chair, praised all the students for their hard work these past two years, and said, “This event allows you to appreciate a variety of skills, including illustration and color analysis, as well as the high-quality draping, flat patterns, and advanced sewing techniques that FIT is renowned for.” The exhibition will be open free of charge from June 14 to September 7. SUNY Korea Students Shine in Prestigious Competitions
[SBU] L'Oréal Brandstorm 2024 Competition [FIT] The Korea Distribution Association - College Student Idea Contest Stony Brook University (SBU) and Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) students of SUNY Korea have once again proven their talents and capabilities on the international stage, securing top honors in two prestigious competitions. SBU Takes First Place in L'Oréal Brandstorm 2024 Competition Incheon Global Campus students have secured first place in the highly competitive L'Oréal Brandstorm 2024 local competition. The winning team was Sunghyun Shin, majoring in Technology & Society at Stony Brook University, Nayoung Kim, majoring Molecular Life Sciences at Ghent University Global Campus, and Bae Hasung, also studying Molecular Life Sciences at Ghent University Global Campus. Sunghyun Shin, expressing her gratitude, remarked “It was a great experience collaborating with fellow colleagues from the Incheon Global Campus students. Moreoever, being able to achieve 1st place among the top-tier Korean universities was challenging yet fulfilling.” These students will now compete in the Loreal Brandstorm International Competition that will be held in the United Kingdom this June. FIT Students Recognized for Outstanding Achievement in The Korea Distribution Association - College Student Idea Contest Meanwhile, Fashion Institute of Technology students received the ‘Idea Award’ in The Korea Distribution Association - College Student Idea Contest. Under the guidance of Professor Hyeyeon Jeong, the FIT team showcased their expertise in the field of distribution and marketing for Lotte Home Shopping. The winning FIT’s FBM department team members include Minseo Cho, Yujin Lee, and Chaeun Moon, whose dedication and creativity stood out among competitors. Their innovative ideas and strategic insights underscore FIT's commitment to nurturing future leaders in the fashion and business industries. Minseo Cho said, "We were able to differentiate ourselves from other students from Korean universities by providing creative and yet very profound ideas by utilizing the knowledge we learned in the Fashion Business Management classes. Despite all of us being first-year students, it was a great honor and a very meaningful experience to win such a competition." These remarkable accomplishments serve as a milestone for both SBU and FIT as they pave their future careers. By excelling on the global stage, they continue to uphold academic excellence and innovation that defines these renowned institutions.

Building a Brand Identity: Insights from Boyoung Lee's FIT Guest Speaker Event
“Creativity is intelligence having fun." Boyoung Lee quoted Albert A. Einstein during her presentation at the FIT Guest Speaker Event on Wednesday, April 24th. As the Chief Brand Officer and EVP of Brand & Creative Strategy at Shinsegae, Lee was able to share her experiences and insights in the industry as she spoke on the topic of “Building a Brand Identity.” Lee emphasized the vital role of creativity in crafting a brand identity. She underscored the importance of infusing creativity into every aspect of the process, highlighting the need for innovative thinking and original storytelling. Throughout her presentation, she delved into the creative process, emphasizing her collaborative approach with her team. She emphasized the significance of cultivating relationships and fostering teamwork to achieve success in brand building. During the Q&A session, students had the opportunity to ask questions and gain deeper insights into the industry and workplace. When asked about memorable projects, Lee emphasized the importance of relationships over individual achievements. In response to a question about the trend that is shaping the future of the fashion industry, she mentioned the integration of AI and its transformative potential. Rather than shying away from technological advancements, her team embraces innovation, seeking ways to leverage AI to enhance their creative processes. Furthermore, Lee generously shared recommendations for podcasts and books, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and personal development. Notably, she also shared insights into her role as a mother of two, acknowledging parenthood as a transformative experience that has enriched her leadership abilities. In today's dynamic business landscape, establishing a distinctive brand identity is essential for success. Boyoung Lee's insights into the creative process and the importance of storytelling offer valuable guidance for professionals seeking to carve out their brand identity in a competitive market.

[Student Reporters] Intern Insights: FIT Students at SUNY Korea Dives into the Corporate World
In their fourth semester, students of FIT at SUNY Korea are offered an internship course program that allows them to get first-hand experience in the working industry. Not only do they get to experience working in an actual company, but they are also trained in working ethics and future career skills. This year, the program has 15 Fashion Business Management students working in well-known global brands such as Sejung Company, bySophie, Banzai Living, and IPark Mall. Didier Dubot is a jewelry brand under Sejung Company and the department in which 2 FIT students were placed. At Didier Dubot, students were assigned tasks such as market research, brand analysis, and site reviews—all of which aligned with what they learned throughout their previous semesters. With this, students could apply the knowledge and skills they gained from their courses in a professional work environment. The interns were also tasked with a store visit, during which they examined Didier Dubot’s collections at Coex mall while also conducting a competitor analysis by browsing nearby luxury accessory brands. Several students were asked about their experiences. Pamela Wang said, “Interning at the HDC IPark Mall at Yongsan, Seoul, I joined the Content Development Team and am working on planning pop-up stores.” For Maxine Leye, “Working at the startup company Banzai Living Inc., there are many hats to wear as I get direct insight on how the beauty industry works from product research, packaging selection and digital marketing. Mindful creativity and effective time management are some of the key aspects of the internship.” Arim Lee added, “At LIE Collection, I had the opportunity to apply the skills I learned in school, such as Photoshop and Excel, in real-world scenarios. This hands-on experience allowed me to grow professionally and personally, gaining valuable insights and proficiency.” Overall, the internship program offers students a valuable opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings and develop essential professional skills. The upcoming 'Internship Panel Event' on March 3rd, hosted by the Career Center, will further enrich this learning experience by providing a platform for students to listen as their fellow colleagues, who have experienced internships, share their insights and tips on how they were able to search for their internships, the application process, and how they plan to use the experience on their next career path.
